What Makes Cartmel Racecourse Worth A Group Booking

Cartmel Racecourse: Racing in the Heart of the Lake District

      Cheltenham Festival Hospitality

Nestled in the south of the Lake District, Cartmel Racecourse is unapologetically a ‘holiday’ course, heavily patronised by tourists and those looking for a great day out. Racing tradition here stretches back to the twelfth century, when monks from the nearby Priory are believed to have started the sport, though the annual Whit Monday race meeting only formally began in 1856. The course is National Hunt only, run on a left-handed track of roughly one mile with six fences, and boasts one of the longest run-ins in Britain at four furlongs, meaning races are often decided very late, creating dramatic finishes for spectators. Key events on the calendar include the Cartmel Cup and the Grand Veterans’ Chase, with the season running across nine days from late May Bank Holiday to August Bank Holiday. The relaxed, celebratory atmosphere on racedays is what makes Cartmel truly special, drawing large crowds who come to watch the racing, picnic, and enjoy the funfair — and in recent years, live concerts from big-name acts have added to the occasion.
