Carlisle Racecourse: Racing History in the Border Country
Carlisle Racecourse has one of the longest racing histories in Britain, with meetings at its original site recorded as far back as 1599. The current course at Blackwell on the outskirts of Carlisle opened in 1904 and stages both flat and National Hunt racing throughout the year. It is home to the Carlisle Bell, one of the oldest horse races in existence, held annually in June. In 1929, Carlisle made history as the first racecourse in Britain to introduce the Tote. Set in beautiful Cumbrian countryside with a stiff uphill finish, Carlisle offers a distinctive and characterful day out.
